Although the majority
of Joseph Havel large-scale sculptures are made of bronze, other works incorporate
clothing, pushing the boundaries of human forms and ideas surrounding
production and labor. In a parallel studio practice Havel incorporates the
use of shirt labels to assemble large scale monochromatic
"paintings" on walls. He uses these shirt labels as a vehicle for
commentary on a variety of issues of the contemporary world: the role of men
in a woman's world, the role of the artist, and self-identity.
